Best of the Bookfair
I wanted to share two of my top finds at AWP’s book fair this year, because you shouldn’t have to go to Seattle to get some great literary goodies.
Prompt & Circumstance
This gem of a website bills itself as “A resource dedicated to lighting creative fires.” Now what could be better than that? Every month Prompt & Circumstance puts out new prompts in four different categories for your writing pleasure. If you’re especially proud of what the prompts have helped you create, you can submit your piece to their journal, Promptly, or their new semiannual writing contest. I’ve never technically had writer’s block–I don’t think being lazy counts–but sometimes I need to get my head out of my current project, and the next time I look for a little fictional vacation, this is the website I’ll be visiting.
Journal of the month
If you’re anything like me, you’re slightly ashamed that you haven’t subscribed to any of the brilliant lit mags out there and unsure which one deserves the few dollars you have to spare. Enter Journal of the Month. This is a simple concept that delivers exactly what it promises. You sign up for however many journals you want, decide how often you want them (monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly) and these folks will send you a different journal each time. They have 28 participating journals, including such notables as Tin House, Ploughshares, and Prairie Schooner. It’s the perfect solution for all us wafflers out there.
